Today Nissan stopped by Cars and Coffee Irvine during its IDx in Socal event. I was there as the cars arrived to get some pictures and hobnob with Nissan PR folks and get as much information about the car. I didn't learn anything new from Nissan, even though I bribed them with Girl Scout cookies (what sort of human does not respond to Thin Mints?). I also did not get to sit in them, I was one of about 1000 people that asked the exasperated folks in charge of the cars, but I thought trading the privilege of using my Google Glass for a sit in the car would work. Not so much. I can say that the Freeflow IDx does have actual shag carpet and real denim seats, this should absolutely be an option and I would check that box.
There was also some more to Cars and Coffee Irvine than just IDx on Saturday. Some cool classic Datsun 510's, a classic Mini delivery van, Bisimoto 550 HP turbo CR-Z, and one saved Ferrari Enzo. Below are the Glasshole pics I have from this morning and a shaky cam video of the Free Flow actually moving on its own.
First off here is the IDx NISMO, fun fact it has a totally flat undercarriage, but mostly because it is a concept and not really meant for the streets.
People just crowded around it to get pictures and try to touch it, not pictured is the guy taken away by ninjas for actually touching the car.
The interior is race ready, just not FIA approved. I would like to point out that this is a two pedal car.
The Freeflow is the version I would prefer, I love the smoother lines and less busy body work.
Here is the interior shot with that cool shag carpet and denim seats, but maintaining the minimalist interior aspects like the door pull handles.
Here is that shaky cam video I was talking about.
As for the other rides of note..
A sweet 510
On Mini delivery van.
A Bisi CR-Z pushing 550 hp and still a hybrid!
And one saved Enzo!
Edit: Nibbles ate some pictures...hope that is fixed. Because Kinja is a mean mean entity try this link !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

My favorite there is the Mini delivery. Is there something wrong with me?

no motorshots of the datsun? i doubt anyone with a camera could have failed much harder. what'd it sound like. did the driver say anything about it?

no not really. infact I come to Oppo because this is a place where it is safe to think "i'd take that Mini delivery Wagon over an Enzo."

I am extremely upset that both of these appear to be missing a pedal. more upset than when I saw the electric parking brake in the Kia gt4 Stinger.

For those who missed it, here are a few videos including footage of the cars in action.

IDx Nismo:
Enjoy!

Videos look great, I would have better shots by I am experiencing some focus issues with my new Cannon and old Sigma lens.

Owner was never around for the black Datsun 510, if he was I would have gotten a motor shot and asked about power. Our Cars and Coffee is not too keen on motor revving due to the apartments close by.

Totally agree about the freeflow, its a gorgeous body shape! I hope when it hits production it looks more in line with that.

Cry me a river. There's nothing wrong with an electronic parking brake. I live with one every single day and haven't found it to be an inconvenience.

I love these cars, but is is just me or do they seem a little big? I mean they are supposed to be a new 510 and compete with the like of the frs and brz, correct?

i oppologise, my post seems much meaner this morning....might have to get a breathalyzer hooked to my computer so i can't post while drinking.

You missed more math: "Because Kinja is a mean mean entity try this link Cars and Coffee Irvine Photos" = poor punctuation.

I get the whole throwback design trend and I love the 510 vibe of these concepts, but I'm
REALLY
unsure what to think of fully importing the '70s with the shag and denim.
For anyone who saw these live, did it appear to "work" from a design standpoint?
![]() 02/02/2014 at 10:59 |

Soo... practicality of denim upholstery? Has anyone ever owned a car with it?
The seat upholstery in my car is shot (30-years-old with 170K M, so to be expected), and I kind of love this idea. Seems to me it'd be grippy and durable. I might use black denim instead of blue, but this looks kind of promising.

I think the IDx NISMO has a really strong resemblance to the Hakosuka and that makes me love it even more
Oh, the things i would do for a Hakosuka...

My Legacy 2.5i has less than 170hp and an Electronic E-brake.... Hoonage still occurs. Only teenagers trying to impress people need an E-brake to have fun. Especially considering that'll be a 315hp RWD car...
![]() 02/02/2014 at 11:43 |
|
If they keep it like they're saying, all lightweight and RWD and optional manuals, and looking this crazy, I'll be more excited for this than I was for the FRS/BRZ.

OMG so much want for the NISMO!! Any guesses as to engine configuration based on the exhaust note?
NISSAN, I WILL TOTALLY BUY THIS IF: You actually make it, it has 280 - 300 hp, and a 6spd MT.

The IDX is cool and all, but I'd still take the original over it.

The best part is Nissan announce this will be coming. I am absolutely ecstatic. Although idk if they can get away with that front end with all the pedestrian safety rules. But I can't wait to hear more about this I'm definitely a huge fan

"I would like to point out that this is a two petal car."
I thought the Beetle was the only car available with the in-car Vase.

Who cares about impressing others? The fact stands that ebraking is fun on a bun, and having it be electronic is about as good as having paddle shifters in my book. You dont see rally drivers with electronic ebrakes. But then again, Im just a mechanical sort of guy. I like stick shift and regular ebrakes and get more joy out of having that control, actual performance be damned.

I want one of those nissans so damn bad.
![]() 02/02/2014 at 13:47 |

Nissan, again, you WILL have my business if you make the NISMO version of the IDx with a manual transmission. I'll take mine in dark green please.

Is it just a styling thing? Or is there some mandate that all new cars must have a tall body with a small greenhouse? Here is a quick photo edit I put together of what it would need to look like to get my interest.
I just removed the excess body panel. I did not resize the greenhouse.

3/4 of the way through "Can you squeeze a GTR motor in there?"
I love all the GTR's but can we give the RB/2JZ into EVERYTHING a break. Everyone knows its LSX or nothing.

Why not take the Enzo, sell it and then buy a "dream fleet" of cars including the mini delivery van.
![]() 02/02/2014 at 16:11 |

i would like to crush everyone's dreams right now by saying:
that sharknose front isnt going to get past pedestrian safety requirements OR the wind tunnel.
why cant someone just invent pedestrian airbags so we dont have to worry about this shit anymore?

Yes I do, all the pictures are from my glass. I would have some from my camera but my memory card is not playing nice.

Talking to the product rep from Japan the only way they would make it is if it was RWD. They may build it from the next Z platform.
![]() 02/02/2014 at 17:05 |
|
In person they are not very big, they are larger than the original 510, but no car is going to be that size again.
![]() 02/02/2014 at 19:13 |
|
That would be the logical thing to do. For the going price of an Enzo Which is right around 1 million, lets say 900,000 for a quick sale, you could buy a house, with 40 acres build a six car garage and fill it with awesome, and then set up a rally stage in your back yard and buy few beaters so you and your friends can race arouns your track. Not to mention buy every tool you've ever wanted.
![]() 02/02/2014 at 19:16 |

I wasn't saying the GT4 had an auto. I was saying that the electric parking break makes me as upset as the autos in the IDxes
![]() 02/02/2014 at 19:19 |
|
But it's a sports car. You don't put unsporty things in sports cars, And look at that placement. IN FRONT OF THE SHIFTER, in a manual so you have to reach around the shifter ever freaking time you want to drive. that's horribly inconvenient.
![]() 02/02/2014 at 19:25 |
|
I Guess I should have specified that the placement is really what bothers me. The is 125% no freaking good reason to put it in front of the shifter. Having to reach around the shifter every time you want to drive or park you car is stupid. I do love the start button placement though.

We'll, the glass is truly a human interface device. can you directly go on oppo and upload photos to a post on glass?
![]() 02/03/2014 at 01:55 |
|
Not quite, what I do is get them up to my Google account and then from my phone I can get them to Oppo. Think of Glass as an extension of your phone rather than a replacement. What it does is allow you to interact with your email, text, and voice while also being able to create pictures and share them from the device. There is more and more that you can do that allows you to interface with the world around you as well. I get directions, movie times, weather, and translations from Glass a lot better than I can with any other device I carry.

Does the IDx come in... not ugly?
![]() 02/03/2014 at 09:25 |

seems like any car that banks so much on "retro" design by basically putting weird details on an old car, always ends up being about eight times as big. look how thick and fat the current challenger is compared to the car it's meant to look like
![]() 02/03/2014 at 12:50 |
|
Yes!
I would even be OK with say 250 horses.
![]() 02/03/2014 at 20:47 |

Thank you. Was nice to get to hear them.
![]() 02/03/2014 at 20:49 |
|
Definitely. If they can keep the weight down, keep it rwd, give it a turbocharged i4 w/anything north of 220hp, and a six speed manual, they'll have my money. Come on Nissan, build it and do it right.
![]() 02/03/2014 at 21:01 |
|
I doubt I will be in a position to buy or lease a new car for many years. However, this would be the one I got based purely on aesthetics at this point. I love those old Japanese cars. They look like tiny muscle cars. This is the perfect blend of retro and new, I love it. Much prefer the Nismo version.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 10:31 |
|
Well i figured that it would obviously have to grow from the original, haha. but are you saying it is about the same size as an frs, or just slightly larger or as big as say a 370z? definitely looks a lot taller.
![]() 02/05/2014 at 12:58 |
|
less length than an FRS, same width, about an inch taller. Not even near 350Z size.
![]() 01/03/2016 at 18:56 |

Nissan must still be testing public reaction if they’re still showing them off to the public. The Nismo would most likely be the visual predecessor of a potential production 51- I mean.. IDx.
Who knows, turn the Z to a Rwd sporty Crossover and give us a IDx Nismo.
